Michelle Monaghan
Michelle Monaghan is an actor, born 1976.
Michelle Monaghan arrived through the standard grind of small parts: a couple of scenes in Unfaithful, a season of Boston Public, work that pays rent and teaches nothing. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 2005 was the first script that trusted her with jokes, and Harmony Faith Lane remains the clearest statement of what she does well, which is play hurt and funny in the same sentence without diluting either.
What followed was a decade of being the best actor in the thankless role. She is the wife in Mission: Impossible III and Fallout, the girlfriend in Gone Baby Gone, the voice on the other end of the line in Eagle Eye and Source Code. Those parts exist structurally to give a man something to lose, and Monaghan keeps refusing to play them that way: her Julia has more going on in a two-minute scene than the plot has any use for.
Trucker and Fort Bliss were the corrective, small films built around difficult women with children they are not good at raising. True Detective handed her Maggie Hart, the most argued-over role in that season, and she is consistently sharper than the writing she was given. More recently she has moved into leads and producing, with The Family Plan and its sequel on one side and Echoes, Nanny and Black Site on the other, which is a fair summary of a career spent alternating between the paycheque and the interesting thing.

Where to start with Michelle Monaghan
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the one to watch first and the one most people have missed. Harmony is a drunk, grieving, extremely funny aspiring actress, and Monaghan gets every register of that inside a film that never slows down for her.
Gone Baby Gone is next, because it puts the same warmth into a Boston crime story where warmth is a liability. Source Code is the best of the high-concept thrillers she anchored, since the whole premise leans on whether you believe a stranger could be worth saving in eight minutes.
If you want the version of her nobody markets, find Trucker, a small hard film about a woman who is a bad mother and knows it.
True Detective is essential and frustrating in equal measure. The Family Plan is the current mode: broad, likeable, and better acted than it needs to be.
The action films
Julia across three Mission: Impossible films is the clearest case of a part written as a plot device and played as a person. Source Code is the best of the science fiction.
The dramatic work
Where the range actually is. Trucker is a small film she carries entirely alone as a long-haul driver handed a son she does not want, and almost nobody saw it.
The comedies
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the funniest thing she has done and the one to start with, and the Shane Black dialogue suits her better than anything since.
The television
True Detective gave her the thankless wife role and she made it the most interesting thing in the second half. The White Lotus and Echoes are the recent work.
