Michael Shanks
Michael Shanks is an actor, born 1970.
Michael Shanks has spent his career in one place and made a good living there: Vancouver, and the genre television that shoots in it. Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1 is the role, and he kept playing him long past the series itself, through the direct-to-video features The Ark of Truth and Continuum (both 2008), the Children of the Gods feature, and appearances on Stargate Universe. Very few actors get to live in one character that long.
Wikipedia's summary of him is unusually blunt: he is known, it says, for low budget genre work filmed in Canada. The credits do not argue. Mega Snake (2007), The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon (2008), Arctic Blast (2010), Tactical Force (2011), 13 Eerie (2013). These are films made to a price, and he is reliably the most convincing thing in them.
The second substantial job is Charlie Harris on Saving Hope, a Canadian medical drama that ran for years and asked for a completely different register. Around the edges sit the small parts in larger productions: an agent in Elysium, Adrien Lazar in Red Riding Hood, Victor on Burn Notice, Gabriel on Andromeda, and Time Cut (2024).
There is no tragedy in this list. It is a working actor's career inside a functioning regional industry, and what keeps it interesting is how completely he commits to material that has not earned that commitment.

Where to start with Michael Shanks
Everything routes through Stargate SG-1, and there is no sensible way around it: years inside one character, and the show is at its best once it stops explaining itself. Do not start at the pilot if you are impatient, start a season or two in.
The films are for people already inside. Stargate: Continuum is the better of the two 2008 features, a time-travel story that plays fair with its own history, and Stargate: The Ark of Truth closes off a plot the series left open.
Outside all that, Saving Hope is the real acting showcase and the one to watch if science fiction is not your thing. Burn Notice gives him a memorable guest turn, Andromeda is the other early genre credit worth a look, Elysium is a blink, and Time Cut is the recent one.
