Michael Adamthwaite

Michael Adamthwaite is an actor, born 1981.

Michael David Adamthwaite is a Canadian actor, born in North York, Ontario in 1981. His filmography is essentially a map of the Vancouver production industry across twenty-five years: the Jaffa Her'ak on Stargate SG-1, a boat captain in Eight Below, a heavy in Walking Tall, small parts in Sucker Punch, Final Destination 5, Red Riding Hood, Horns, The BFG, Warcraft, Cold Pursuit and Resident Alien. These are the credits of somebody who works constantly and is rarely the reason you pressed play, which describes most of the profession.

The bigger half of the career is voice work. He is the voice of Jay in Lego Ninjago, across both Masters of Spinjitzu and Dragons Rising, which means a very large number of children know him extremely well without knowing his face. He has also done Colossus in X-Men: Evolution, Thor in Next Avengers, Balder in Hulk vs. Thor, Namor in a Fantastic Four series, and a long run of anime dubs.

The most substantial live-action job is also the least visible one: he plays Luca, a gorilla, in War for the Planet of the Apes, entirely through performance capture. There is no breakout here and there does not need to be one.

Where to start with Michael Adamthwaite

His largest role is also the one where you cannot see him: Luca in War for the Planet of the Apes, a performance-capture gorilla in a film that treats its apes as its leads. Start there.

For the voice work that actually built the career, Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu and its continuation LEGO Ninjago: Dragons Rising as Jay, plus X-Men: Evolution for the earlier animation.

In live action, Stargate SG-1 gave him the longest recurring part he has had, and Resident Alien is the most enjoyable recent one. Warcraft and Cold Pursuit round it out as the sort of dependable supporting work that keeps a jobbing actor busy for decades.
