Megumi Ogata
Megumi Ogata is an actor, born 1965.
The adolescent boy is Ogata's speciality, and she has more or less set the terms for how that voice sounds in Japanese animation. Shinji Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion is the case everyone cites, and rightly so: the performance is not a pitched-up impression of a teenager but a genuinely uncomfortable one, all held breath and swallowed sentences, and it is a large part of why the character became an argument instead of a mascot. She has now played him across the 1995 series, The End of Evangelion and all four Rebuild films, which is nearly three decades inside the same interior crisis.
The range around that is wider than the Shinji reputation allows. Kurama in Yu Yu Hakusho is calm where Shinji is frantic. Yukito Tsukishiro in Cardcaptor Sakura is warm and unhurried. Add Yuta Okkotsu in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Itona Horibe in Assassination Classroom, Hanako in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, the Danganronpa leads, work in Sailor Moon and Magic Knight Rayearth, and a catalogue of well over a hundred credits.
She sings too, releasing music under the name em:óu. What holds the acting together is a refusal of the cute register that dominates so much of the industry: her boys sound anxious, dry or wounded, often all three at once, and almost never charming. It is a narrow instrument played with unusual precision, and it has kept her near the centre of the medium since the early 1990s.

Where to start with Megumi Ogata
Start with Neon Genesis Evangelion; there is no substitute, because the series is where the voice and the character became inseparable, and if you only ever hear her once it should be here. Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion follows straight after and asks more of her than anything else she has done.
The Rebuild films offer a calmer reading of the same person, and Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is the one worth your time even if you skip the middle of the sequence.
For the range, Yu Yu Hakusho gives you Kurama, poised and quiet, and Cardcaptor Sakura the gentlest thing in the catalogue. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the modern showcase and proof that the anxious-teenager register never stopped being useful, while Danganronpa: The Animation is where the material runs at its most heightened.
Evangelion
Shinji Ikari is the role, and she has now played him across the series, the original films and the entire rebuild sequence, which is nearly thirty years with the same fourteen-year-old. The performance is almost entirely internal and it is exhausting to listen to.
The nineties roles
A remarkable run in one decade: Kurama in Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Uranus, Yukito in Cardcaptor Sakura, and the original Toei Yugi. Each of them is a different answer to the question of how a woman plays a boy convincingly.
The recent work
The later career is as busy as the early one. Yuta in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the biggest recent role, Danganronpa brought two of her game characters to screen, and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun has her playing twins. The workload has not slowed at all.
