Meg Donnelly

Meg Donnelly is an actor, born 2000.

Donnelly took the Disney route and got further along it than most. She was Taylor Otto for five seasons on the ABC sitcom American Housewife, and since 2018 she has played Addison in the Zombies films, a Disney Channel musical franchise that has now run to four features plus an animated series and a concert special. It is a peculiar kind of stardom: enormous with an audience under fifteen, close to invisible above it.

She is a triple threat in the old sense, singing and dancing as well as acting, which is why the musicals work at all. The more interesting move has been sideways rather than up. In The Winchesters she played Mary Campbell, a young version of a character carried over from a long-running series, in front of an audience with firm opinions about it, and she played it without the Disney gloss.

The other line is animation. She has voiced Supergirl for DC across Legion of Super-Heroes and all three parts of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, a substantial run in that corner of the business and probably a better fit than the live-action superhero pipeline would have been. There is a recurring part in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series too, and a turn on The Masked Singer as Coral.

Where to start with Meg Donnelly

Begin at the beginning, because there is no sophisticated alternative. Z-O-M-B-I-E-S establishes Addison, the songs are the good ones, and everything after it assumes you have seen it. Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 2 and Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 3 escalate the premise in ways that are either delightful or exhausting depending on your age.

For adults arriving from somewhere else, The Winchesters is the more interesting watch, a prequel series where she carries the female lead and gets something with weight to play. American Housewife is the sitcom work, five seasons of it, and it holds up better than most family comedies of its era.

The animation is the sleeper. Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One have her voicing Supergirl, and the Crisis trilogy is genuinely ambitious for direct-to-video DC. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is the smaller Disney credit.
