Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik is an actor, born 1975.

Two sitcom roles, fifteen years apart, and a gap in between that is the most interesting thing about Mayim Bialik's filmography. She played the title character of Blossom from 1991 to 1995, having already been on screen as a child in Pumpkinhead and as the young CC in Beaches, both in 1988, plus guest work in MacGyver and Empty Nest.

Then look at what the credit list does after 1995. It thins to a recurring part in The John Larroquette Show and a stretch of voice work: Kristen Kurst in Recess and its spin-off film, Bad Cindy in Lloyd in Space, Lucy in The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Santo Bugito, a Kim Possible movie. For a decade she was mostly a voice.

The return was total. From 2010 to 2019 she played the neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory, drawing four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and winning the Critics Choice Television Award in the same category in 2015 and 2017. What she does with the part is very precise comic work: flat affect, exact diction, and the timing to let a straight line sit for a beat longer than is comfortable.

Since then she has led Call Me Kat, shared Jeopardy hosting duties with Ken Jennings between August 2021 and December 2023, and turned up in features again with Father Mother Sister Brother in 2025. She is also an author. Born in San Diego in 1975.

Where to start with Mayim Bialik

Do not begin The Big Bang Theory at episode one on her account. Her character arrives in the fourth season, and the show is measurably better for it. Amy Farrah Fowler is the rare late addition to a long-running sitcom who changes the chemistry rather than diluting it.

Blossom is the period piece and the historical curiosity, a very early-nineties teen sitcom in which she is carrying the whole thing at a young age.

The one that will surprise you is Beaches, where she plays the young version of Bette Midler's character and does it without a scrap of stage-school gloss. Pumpkinhead is the horror oddity from the same year.

For the recent work, Call Me Kat is her own vehicle and Jeopardy! is a completely different skill set. Recess covers the voice years.
