Maya Rudolph
Maya Rudolph is an actor, born 1972.
Maya Rudolph joined Saturday Night Live in 2000 and stayed seven years, long enough to become the cast member the other cast members leaned on: she could actually sing, she could approximate almost anyone, and she could hold a sketch together when the writing sagged. Film used her carefully at first. Small, sharp parts in 50 First Dates (2004), Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion (2006) and Idiocracy (2006) suggested a comic actor with a straight dramatic gear nobody was asking her to use.
Away We Go (2009) asked, and she was excellent in it. Two years later Bridesmaids made her a fixture, though her role there is the hardest one in the film: the bride is the reasonable person in a comedy about unreasonable people, and Rudolph plays her without ever tipping into scold.
Her strongest decade has arguably been spent in a recording booth. Aunt Cass in Big Hero 6, the mother in The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Daniela in Luca and Connie on Big Mouth all run on the same trick: a voice that swoops from cooing to unhinged inside a single line, with no visible seam. Big Mouth won her Primetime Emmys in 2020 and 2021, and she holds another for a guest turn in a comedy series.
Alongside that she has been quietly reliable for auteurs, in Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice and Licorice Pizza, and for her friends, in Sisters, Wine Country and Disenchanted. It adds up to a career built on being the most trusted person in the room.

Where to start with Maya Rudolph
Two entry points, depending on what you want from her. For the comic performance everyone quotes, Bridesmaids, where she has the thankless straight-woman job and still lands the film's best small moments. For proof of range, Away We Go, a low-key road movie in which she is warm, funny and completely unarmoured.
After that, The Mitchells vs. the Machines is the animated one to see, because the mother is written as a real person and Rudolph plays her that way. Big Mouth gave her the most room, gleefully filthy and worth it for Connie alone, while Luca and Big Hero 6 show the same instrument dialled right down. Idiocracy is the odd one out, a sour satire that has aged into a documentary, and she is the closest thing it has to a heart. Her Licorice Pizza scenes run about two minutes and still land.
The animation work
A second career that has quietly become the larger one. Her voice does warmth and menace at the same pitch, which is why she keeps being cast as mothers, aunts and hormone monsters who are all faintly alarming.
The comedy ensembles
Films built around a group of funny women where her job is to be the still centre while everything else escalates. Bridesmaids is the one that opened the door and she is the most restrained person in it.
Where she plays it straight
Paul Thomas Anderson and Robert Altman both worked out that the comic timing survives being slowed right down. These are the dramatic parts nobody asks her for often enough, and Away We Go carries a whole film on one.
The sketch and sitcom home turf
Seven years on Saturday Night Live built the toolkit, and television keeps handing it back to her. Loot and The Good Place are the two that let her do the whole range in a single season.
