Max Martini
Max Martini is an actor, born 1969.
Martini has spent thirty years playing the man who knows what he is doing. Corporal Henderson in Saving Private Ryan was an early one. Master Sergeant Mack Gerhardt on The Unit, the CBS drama about Delta Force operators, is the fullest use anyone has made of him, and it is also the least-seen thing on his resume.
The particular quality is that he underplays authority. Where other actors bark, Martini drops his voice and speeds up, which is what people who actually do dangerous jobs tend to do under pressure, and it is why films about real operations keep hiring him: 13 Hours, where he played the contractor Mark Geist, plus Captain Phillips and The Great Raid. He does not perform toughness, which is exactly why he is the most convincing tough guy in a lot of rooms.
Outside that lane he takes the work. Herc Hansen in Pacific Rim makes him the emotional spine of a film about giant robots, and he plays it entirely straight, which is a large part of why the film lands. Taylor the bodyguard across all three Fifty Shades films is the same silent-professional register transplanted into a very different genre, and it is comfortably his most-watched performance. Recent years have brought television in Lioness, Bosch: Legacy and The Order, the science fiction thriller Osiris in 2025, and the crime drama Hollywood Grit, which he also produced.

Where to start with Max Martini
Begin on television. The Unit is the hardest sell on this list and the right answer anyway: a network procedural about special-forces soldiers that took the domestic half as seriously as the missions, with Martini as the team's steadiest hand.
If you want films instead, Saving Private Ryan is the early credit and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is the fullest one, where he plays a real contractor and never once plays him as a hero. Captain Phillips uses him for a couple of scenes of pure procedure and he is flawless in them. Pacific Rim is the fun one, and his complete refusal to wink at the material is why the emotional stuff works. Contact is a blink-and-you-miss-it early credit. Fifty Shades of Grey is his most-watched work by a mile, and he is the only person in it playing an actual job.
The military work
Thirty years of soldiers, and he is one of the few actors doing it who is convincing to people who have actually served. The Unit gave him five seasons of the procedure and 13 Hours put him inside a real account.
The genre films
Action and science fiction where he is generally the competent one. Pacific Rim is the biggest and gives him a father-and-son pairing that turns into the emotional core of the film, which nobody expected.
The other work
The Fifty Shades films cast him as the bodyguard across all three and are the most-seen thing he has done, which is a strange fate for an actor of this type. Redbelt is the David Mamet one and much the better film.
