Matt Whelan
Matt Whelan is an actor.
Whelan came up through New Zealand television, which is a useful place to start a career because a working actor there gets to be a lead rather than the sixth name on a call sheet. His first listed film credit is a walk-on billed as Kissing Boy in the 2007 comedy Eagle vs Shark. Go Girls then made him Brad Caulfield across a comedy-drama run that gave him the repetitions most of his international peers only get in guest spots.
The imported jobs are the two people cite. He played Hugh Hefner in Amazon's American Playboy series, a straight-faced impersonation job, and he turned up in the third season of Narcos as DEA agent Daniel Van Ness, the kind of part that requires an actor to look plausible in a room full of people the show has already established as dangerous. Neither is a star turn. Both are the sort of work that keeps an actor employed on two sides of the Pacific.
Since then the run has been mostly genre and mostly ensemble: Pork Pie in 2017, The Tank in 2023, and two features due in 2026. He is reliable in the register where an ordinary man has to react convincingly to something appalling, which is a more useful trait in a supporting actor than range is.

Where to start with Matt Whelan
Most people will arrive through Narcos, and that works as a sampler: his DEA agent Daniel Van Ness turns up in the third season, and Whelan plays him as a man doing paperwork inside a war, which is the right choice. The foundation, though, is Go Girls, where he had room to build a character across years rather than episodes.
After that, Eagle vs Shark is a curiosity, a 2007 walk-on with a character name that tells you the size of it. Genre completists can take The Tank and Pork Pie as a double bill of what a mid-career New Zealand actor actually gets offered, and We Bury the Dead and Apex are the 2026 pair to watch for.
