Matt Lanter

Modeling paid first. Matt Lanter started in 2004 and was on screen the same year in Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, with the series Point Pleasant close behind, and by the end of the decade he had the two careers he would run in parallel: Liam Court on 90210, from 2009 to 2013, and a microphone.

The microphone is the real career. Lanter has voiced Anakin Skywalker since the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars film and the series that followed it, through Forces of Destiny, Tales of the Jedi and the Lego specials, a run stretching across at least fourteen years in this catalog alone. The trick of the performance is that he never attempts an impression of the live-action Anakin. He plays a competent, likeable young officer, which gives the drift toward Darth Vader somewhere to fall from, and it is why an animated spinoff ended up rehabilitating the character for a generation.

Live action has been less kind. Disaster Movie (2008) and Vampires Suck (2010) are parodies that have aged into nothing, Sorority Row and The Roommate are the horror-adjacent years, and Pitch Perfect 3 is a job. Timeless, from 2016 to 2018, is the exception: Wyatt Logan is the only live-action lead here written to what he is good at, decency without dullness.

The rest is animation, where he is a reliable hire. He voices Aquaman across four DC features and Blue Beetle across all three parts of Crisis on Infinite Earths, plus Harry Osborn on Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man.
