Masako Katsuki

Masako Katsuki is an actor, born 1958.

Masako Katsuki has the low voice, and Japanese animation does not write many parts for it. She came out of the Theater Echo company, debuted as Mary Scott in an animated White Fang, and spent the eighties at the serious end of the medium: Reccoa Londe in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam in 1985, Maria von Trapp in Trapp Family Story, Maya Kitajima in Glass Mask, plus work on Legend of the Galactic Heroes and a 1987 adaptation of The Tale of Genji.

The two roles that carry her name are both women who have earned their authority and are tired of it. Michiru Kaioh, better known as Sailor Neptune, is the aloof one who has already worked out what is happening while everyone around her is still shouting. Tsunade in Naruto is the same instinct scaled up, a leader with a gambling habit and a short fuse, and Katsuki has now voiced her across the original series from 2002, all of Shippuden, a run of features and then Boruto, which is roughly a quarter of a century in one part.

She narrates at least as much as she acts, and the recent credits show a performer who has aged into the roles the industry eventually found for her: Shenlu in The Apothecary Diaries in 2023, Leviae in Cautious Hero, Sheffield in The Familiar of Zero, and, much earlier, the assassin Zakuro in Ninja Scroll in 1993. She moved from Theater Echo to 81 Produce and has not visibly slowed down in forty years.

Where to start with Masako Katsuki

Naruto is the practical answer, because Tsunade is the role and the show is where most people meet her. She arrives well into the run, and the series audibly improves the moment an adult with actual gravity walks into it. Naruto Shippūden is where the part deepens.

For the older, stranger work, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is the 1985 mecha series that made her name in the serious end of the industry, and Ninja Scroll is a brutal, beautifully drawn 1993 film with a genuinely memorable villain in it. Sailor Moon S the Movie: Hearts in Ice is the easiest place in this catalogue to hear her Sailor Neptune. The Apothecary Diaries is the excellent modern show, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the enormous eighties space opera for anyone with the patience, and Wonder Egg Priority is the odd, gorgeous recent one.

Naruto

Tsunade is a legendary ninja, a compulsive gambler and the village leader, and the role runs across two series, a sequel and four films. It is the part that introduced her to a global audience.

The Gundam work

Reccoa Londe in Zeta Gundam is one of the most contested characters in that franchise and she plays the ambiguity straight. The three compilation films revisit the same performance twenty years later.

The eighties and nineties films

The OVA boom, when a great deal of very strange animation got made and exported badly. Ninja Scroll and Appleseed are the two Western viewers are most likely to have encountered.

The recent series

Forty years in and still cast as the woman who runs things. The Apothecary Diaries and Raven of the Inner Palace both use her for court authority, and both are worth watching.
