Marsha Warfield
Marsha Warfield is an actor, born 1954.
Stand up came first for Marsha Warfield. She grew up on Chicago's South Side, worked the clubs, and was writing and performing on The Richard Pryor Show before most people knew her face. That background explains her acting style completely: she does not push a joke, she waits behind it.
Roz Russell, the bailiff she played on Night Court from 1986, is one of television's great economical characters. Where the rest of that cast escalated, Warfield stayed still, delivered a flat line and let the silence afterwards do the work. She gets more out of a look than the writers put on the page, and the show knew it, which is why the 2023 revival brought her back to the same bench.
Empty Nest gave her Dr. Maxine Douglas from 1993, and film work of the same period put her in Caddyshack II as Royette Tyler, The Whoopee Boys as Officer White and Mask as a homeroom teacher.
Then the credits stop for roughly two decades, and start again with a late run that has been busier than the first: Glodine in The Upshaws, Toni Wilson on 9-1-1, and interviews in the documentaries Phat Tuesdays and Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, where she is one of the people the history is actually about rather than a talking head hired to describe it.

Where to start with Marsha Warfield
Night Court is the entire case for her, and you can drop in anywhere after she joins in 1986. Roz needs no setup, and the joke is always the same shape, which here is a compliment: the pleasure is in how little she does with it.
Night Court returns her to the same bench in the revival, a nice piece of continuity even though the newer show is gentler than the original.
Empty Nest is the other regular sitcom role, The Upshaws the recent one, and 9-1-1 the dramatic outlier. To meet the comic she was before any of the acting, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution and Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy both put her in the room where that history was made. Caddyshack II is best filed as a curiosity.
