Maki Kawase

Kawase is a voice actress from Chiba Prefecture, affiliated with Arts Vision, and her career is a good illustration of how that job actually works. She had been picking up small parts since 2017, in A Centaur's Life, Seiren and The Ancient Magus' Bride, before her first main role arrived in 2018 as Elle Hoshino in Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan. The same year brought Junko Konno in Zombie Land SAGA, which remains the role most people know her for.

Look at the shape of the 40-odd credits listed here and a pattern shows up. In the big series she is almost always a supporting character: Shima Iwashita in BOCCHI THE ROCK!, Akira Ogata in My Dress-Up Darling, Fuki Harukawa in Lycoris Recoil, Haruna in Call of the Night, Tokiko Hishigata in Summer Time Rendering, a team member in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. She is also the studios' choice for younger versions of characters, including the child Askeladd in Vinland Saga and the young Will in The Faraway Paladin, which takes a particular skill: sounding like a boy who will later be voiced by somebody else entirely.

The leading roles come in smaller shows. Yuna in Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Yakumo Saotome in Val x Love, Chikage Asakura in TAMAYOMI, Hina Hara in the film maboroshi. The work has not slowed down, with Honey Lemon Soda, mono and several 2026 series on the list. This is what a solid working career in anime looks like from the inside rather than from a fan poll.
