Madeleine West
Madeleine West, born Melanie Ann Weston, came out of Australian soap and then spent two decades refusing to stay there. She played Dee Bliss on Neighbours from 2000 to 2003, returned to the show on and off between 2017 and 2020 as Andrea Somers, and around that built a career across Australian drama, plus a parenting book, Six Under Eight, and work as a director.
The pivot was Satisfaction. Playing Mel, a high-class escort, across the show's 2007 to 2010 run put her in adult cable drama that traded the soap's daylight for something considerably colder, and it reset what the industry thought she was for. The casting afterwards sorted into two lanes: composed professional women, Annika Ehrenberg in Rescue: Special Ops, Dimity in House Husbands, Erica in The Wrong Girl, and women who are somebody else's dangerous problem, Danielle McGuire in Underbelly and again in Fat Tony & Co.
Her film credits are fewer and stranger. She is Sarah Cavanaugh in The Condemned, a film produced by WWE and built around Steve Austin, whose character she is married to, and Mrs Stapleton in Predestination, the Spierig brothers' time-travel picture and the best-directed thing she appears in. Deep Water, in 2026, has her as Martine.

Where to start with Madeleine West
Satisfaction is where to begin if you want to understand the career rather than sample it. The 2007 to 2010 run as Mel gave her the most sustained and least sentimental work she has had, and the series is better than its brothel premise suggests, far more interested in labour than in titillation.
Predestination is the pick for a single sitting: a tight, cold Australian science-fiction film in which she has a small, well-placed part. Go in knowing as little as you can manage.
For television comfort viewing, House Husbands and The Wrong Girl are both easy company, and Fat Tony & Co gives her Danielle McGuire in the true-crime lane Australian television does better than anyone. The Condemned is the odd one out, a wrestling-studio action film in which she is doing real work the picture does not require. Her long run on Neighbours is what most Australians know her for, and it is not among the credits listed here.
