Luna Lauren Velez was born in Brooklyn in 1964 and has spent her career playing the professional in the room who is also the only person behaving like an adult. New York Undercover made her Detective Nina Moreno in 1994. Oz gave her Dr. Gloria Nathan, the prison physician obliged to treat men she has every reason to fear, who treats them anyway.
Maria LaGuerta on Dexter is the one that lasted. LaGuerta is written as an obstacle, an ambitious lieutenant standing between the audience and a protagonist they have been invited to root for, and Velez plays her without ever pleading for sympathy: sharp, political, occasionally petty, and right far more often than the show admits. That is a thankless structural job done extremely well.
Then, unexpectedly, she became a voice that a generation of children knows. Rio Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a mother written with more specificity than animated parents usually get, and Velez gives her a warmth and a bluntness that carry whole scenes with no visual help at all. She returns for Beyond the Spider-Verse. Elsewhere she has kept working across television procedurals and genre films, from Ugly Betty to How to Get Away with Murder to The First Purge, with a good small performance in the independent drama Swallow.

Where to start with Luna Lauren Vélez
Dexter is where to start if you want the acting, because LaGuerta is the hardest part on that show and the one most viewers underrate. Watch how little she does with her face in the squad-room scenes.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is where to start if you want the reason she is beloved. Rio Morales is a supporting role and every scene of it lands, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse gives her the better of the two, a speech to her son that the film builds an entire emotional argument on.
Beyond that, Oz is the toughest and most impressive of the early television, Ugly Betty the sunniest, and Swallow the small film worth hunting down. The First Purge and Shaft are paycheck work, competently done.
