Lucy Lawless
Lucy Lawless is an actor, born 1968.
Lucy Lawless has been typecast in the best possible way. She is a New Zealand actress, singer and director, and the thing she has been hired for since 1995 is physical authority: women in charge of a room who know exactly how they got there.
Xena started inside somebody else's show. This catalogue dates her Hercules: The Legendary Journeys appearances and Xena: Warrior Princess to the same year, and there is an earlier 1994 credit in the same franchise as Lysia, a different character entirely. What the spin-off discovered was that Lawless could carry an hour of syndicated adventure on a straight face and then undercut it, which is why the show outlived its own budget.
Battlestar Galactica used the authority coldly, as D'Anna Biers. Spartacus used it best. Lucretia is the role of her career, a woman running a household as a political operation, and Lawless plays her appetite without ever asking to be forgiven for it. She returned to the character for Spartacus: House of Ashur in 2025, unusual fifteen years after the original began.
The comic work is underrated: Madame Vandersexxx in EuroTrip, Diane Lewis on Parks and Recreation, Ruby in Ash vs Evil Dead, a nun in Minions: The Rise of Gru. Since 2019 she has led My Life Is Murder as Alexa Crowe, and Pike River in 2025 is the most recent film here.

Where to start with Lucy Lawless
Everyone should see some Xena: Warrior Princess and nobody needs all of it. The show swings between camp and real drama from one episode to the next, so sample a few of the well-known ones and you will know quickly whether it is for you.
Spartacus is the better series and the better performance, and the one to choose if you are arriving as an adult with limited time. It is lurid on purpose, and Lucretia is the most controlled thing in it.
Battlestar Galactica gives her a smaller but sharper part in the best science fiction series of its decade. Ash vs Evil Dead is where she plays horror comedy with a straight back, Parks and Recreation is the proof she is funny, and My Life Is Murder is the comfortable one, a lead in a light procedural she is clearly enjoying. Top of the Lake is the serious credit.
