Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll is an author.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote as Lewis Carroll, and was an Oxford mathematician, photographer and reluctant Anglican deacon as well as the author of the two Alice books. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are among the most important works of Victorian literature and the point at which English writing for children stopped moralising and started playing. His nonsense poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark did the same for verse. The logic in Alice is not decoration: Dodgson published on mathematical logic under his own name, and Wonderland runs on the same machinery, applied by someone who found it funny.

Where to start with Lewis Carroll

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland first, obviously, but the sequel Through the Looking-Glass is the better book: colder, more structured, and built on a chess problem. The Hunting of the Snark is the one to read aloud. The Game of Logic shows the day job, and Sylvie and Bruno is the late novel almost nobody finishes, worth a look only if the first two have made you curious about what else was in there.
