L. Frank Baum is an author.
Lyman Frank Baum failed at chicken breeding, at a general store in Dakota Territory, at a newspaper and at a travelling theatre company before The Wonderful Wizard of Oz made him rich at forty four. He wrote fourteen Oz books, plus forty one other novels, eighty three short stories and more than two hundred poems, often under pen names so that his publishers would not compete with themselves. He wanted to be free of Oz and never managed it, closing the country off in a 1910 book and reopening it three years later when the money ran out. The 1939 film has since eclipsed everything else he wrote.

Where to start with L. Frank Baum
The Patchwork Girl of Oz is the best of the later Oz books and a good demonstration of how strange the series became once Baum stopped trying to escape it. The Complete Life and Adventures of Santa Claus invents an entire mythology for Santa and is the most surprising thing he wrote. A kidnapped Santa Claus is its short companion, and The Master Key is early science fiction about a boy who electrocutes his way into a genie.
