Kyle Balda
Kyle Balda is a director, born 1971.
Kyle Balda trained as an animator rather than a writer, first at Industrial Light and Magic and then at Pixar, where he worked on three films. The grounding shows. His features are built around movement, staging and props rather than dialogue, which is convenient, because his most famous characters do not speak a real language.
He co-directed The Lorax in 2012 with Chris Renaud, a title not among the credits listed here, and then took charge of the Minions themselves: Minions in 2015 with Pierre Coffin, Despicable Me 3 in 2017 with Coffin, and Minions: The Rise of Gru in 2022 with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val. Whatever you think of them, they are silent comedy in a modern wrapper, closer to a Chuck Jones chase than to the dialogue-driven animation around them.
The shorts are where the method is clearest. Banana, Orientation Day, Home Makeover and Wagon Ho! run a few minutes each, carry no plot worth the name, and get more out of escalation and one prop than most feature comedies manage in ninety minutes.
He is also credited among the additional voices on the films he directs, which is a common animation-director habit and a reminder of how much of the job is performance rather than administration. His next feature, The Sheep Detectives, arrives in 2026.

Where to start with Kyle Balda
Start with Minions, the clearest statement of what Balda does: ninety minutes of chase comedy in which the leads speak an invented language and the whole thing is carried by staging and timing. If it lands, Minions: The Rise of Gru is the better-made version with sharper set pieces and a genuinely good kung fu sequence.
Despicable Me 3 is the awkward one, a sequel juggling too many plots at once, and Balda's contribution shows up mainly in the chases.
The shorts are the real recommendation and almost nobody watches them. Banana, Orientation Day and Wagon Ho! each run a few minutes, have no dialogue to speak of, and squeeze more comedy out of a single prop than most features get from a script. The Sheep Detectives is the 2026 feature to watch for next.
