Kotono Mitsuishi
Kotono Mitsuishi is an actor, born 1967.
Mitsuishi went straight from high school into the Katsuta Voice Actor's Academy in 1986. She was born in Toda, Saitama, lived for a time in Nagareyama, Chiba, and worked through the agencies Arts Vision and Lasley Arrow before going freelance.
Two roles built the reputation and they pull in opposite directions. Usagi Tsukino in Sailor Moon (1992) is a whiner who has to become a commander in the middle of a sentence, and Mitsuishi plays the switch without smoothing it over. Misato Katsuragi in Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) is the adult in charge who is visibly not managing, and there the same brightness works as a cover story. That is the specific skill: a voice that sounds cheerful while letting you hear the strain sitting underneath it.
She has never let either character go. Sailor Moon Crystal in 2014 and the two Eternal features in 2021 brought Usagi back, and Misato ran the full length of the Rebuild films from 2007 to 2021. Around them sits a working actor's list rather than a star's: Mei Mei in Jujutsu Kaisen, Boa Hancock in One Piece: Stampede, Kir in the Detective Conan films, Hikari Shinomiya in Kaiju No. 8, Tamako Nobi across the Doraemon franchise, Harumi Chono in Paranoia Agent, and an unnamed homeroom teacher in Daily Lives of High School Boys.

Where to start with Kotono Mitsuishi
Two doors here, and they open onto opposite rooms. Sailor Moon is the cheerful one, and the 1993 feature Sailor Moon R: The Movie - The Promise of the Rose is the neatest single serving of it. Neon Genesis Evangelion is the other, and Misato is the performance to hear if you only hear one: the cheer is a management technique and it keeps slipping. Follow it with Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion if you want to know how far she can push a voice.
After that, go sideways rather than deeper. Paranoia Agent is a much colder show than her signature work and she is unrecognisable in it, JUJUTSU KAISEN is the modern, expensive version of the same instrument, and Kaiju No. 8 is the easiest recent entry point.
Evangelion
Misato across thirty years, the original series and the four rebuild films, and it is among the great anime performances. The character performs competence over damage and the voice does all of that work.
Sailor Moon
Usagi across three decades of series and films, which is the longest-running voice role in the medium. She played a crybaby who becomes a leader, for a generation of viewers who grew up alongside the character.
The rest
The two hundred other credits, where the range is much wider than the two famous roles suggest. Paranoia Agent is the Satoshi Kon and the strangest thing here, and Great Teacher Onizuka is the comic register.
