Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an actor, born 1977.
Born in Accra in 1977 and raised in Britain, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith has had the career of a very good stage actor who films between runs. The stage half is the half with the trophy on it: he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for the West End production of Tina.
On screen he is a specialist in institutional authority, which sounds like a limitation and works as a useful niche. He is the detective in Justice League, the physical therapist in Doctor Strange, the sweet-toothed and thoroughly bribable policeman in Wonka, a prison officer in Paddington 2, a priest in Ghost Stories. The common thread is that he underplays all of it. He gives you a man doing his job, which makes the fantasy around him heavier rather than sillier, and it is why directors of big British films keep calling.
Otherwise he works constantly and briefly: The Commuter, Mary Poppins Returns, Apartment 7A, The Veil, The Gorge, and Class, the short-lived Doctor Who spin-off. It is a solid, unshowy screen record, and the honest summary is that nobody has yet written him a film part the size of the one the theatre already gave him.

Where to start with Kobna Holdbrook-Smith
Watch Ghost Stories first, a British horror film built from three nested stories and a great deal of dread, and the least Hollywood use anyone has made of him. After that, Wonka is the most fun, because his policeman is bribed with chocolate across an entire film and he plays the corruption as a slow, happy surrender.
Paddington 2 and Mary Poppins Returns are the family entries and he is reliable in both. Justice League and Doctor Strange are two of the smallest roles in two of the largest films on this page, useful mainly for spotting him. The Commuter gives him more to do than either of those. And if he is on a stage anywhere near you, go to that instead.
