Kim Shin-young
Kim Shin-young is an actor, born 1983.
Kim Shin-young works the hardest and least glamorous corner of Korean entertainment, which is live variety, where you either fill the dead air or you stop getting booked. She debuted in 2004 on the SBS show People Looking For Laughter and took Best Variety Performer at the Baeksang Arts Awards in 2006, two years in, unusually quick in a field that mostly pays out for longevity.
What followed is two decades as a fixture rather than a star turn. She has been regular cast on Men on a Mission, MC'd long stretches of Show! Champion, hosted the Idol Star Athletics Championships, and appeared as herself on Infinite Challenge, Weekly Idol, You Quiz on the Block and Happy Together. Radio has run underneath all of it. In 2018 she joined Celeb Five, the dance group assembled by Song Eun-i's production company, which is the sort of side project that only works when an audience already trusts you to commit fully to a bit.
The acting is sparse and pointed. Small film parts go back to My Girl and I and Midnight FM, and then Park Chan-wook cast her as Yeon-su in Decision to Leave. A career comedian turning up in a Park Chan-wook film is a specific kind of vote of confidence, and it is the credit here most likely to surprise anyone who knows her only from behind a variety desk.
