Kim Rhodes

Kim Rhodes is an actor, born 1969.

Kim Rhodes learned the trade in daytime, playing Cindy Harrison on Another World from 1996 and then on As the World Turns until 2001. That is the acting equivalent of learning to cook in a kitchen that never closes. What she took from it is speed and warmth: she can establish an entire relationship in two lines and make it feel lived in.

Disney used that. As Carey Martin, mother of the twins in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and then The Suite Life on Deck, she spent six years as the only adult in a very loud show, and played the part as tired and funny rather than as a set of house rules.

The role that earned her a devoted following came later. Sheriff Jody Mills turned up on Supernatural in 2010 and recurred until 2020, growing from a guest part into the series' most convincing surrogate parent, and Rhodes played her as somebody who has decided to be steady because the alternative is worse. That is a rare thing on genre television, an adult woman written and performed as simply competent, and the fandom took to her accordingly. Elsewhere she has done sturdy work in Colony, Kung Fu and WHAT / IF, and a handful of family films.

Where to start with Kim Rhodes

Supernatural is the answer, though not from episode one. Jody Mills does not arrive for years, so the episodes worth seeking out are the later ones built around her, where the series briefly becomes a story about people trying to build a household out of survivors.

Her Disney work is the other reason people know her. Take The Suite Life of Zack & Cody first and The Suite Life on Deck after, both far better constructed sitcoms than adults expect going in. Colony is where to go for the dramatic register, while Kung Fu and WHAT / IF are lesser but show she still gets cast for authority rather than warmth. Atlas Shrugged: Part II is a curiosity and no more than that.
