Kensho Ono

Kensho Ono is an actor, born 1989.

Kensho Ono is a Japanese actor and singer, born in Fukuoka in 1989 and affiliated with Animo Produce, with more than a hundred credits behind him. He announced his marriage to the voice actress Kana Hanazawa in 2020.

His signature part is Tetsuya Kuroko, the title character of Kuroko's Basketball, and the casting logic there runs through most of the catalogue. He has a light, unforced voice that reads as harmless, which makes him extremely useful when a character is not. Giorno Giovanna in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Canute in Vinland Saga, Slaine Troyard in Aldnoah.Zero and Floch Forster in Attack on Titan are all young men whose politeness hardens into something colder, and Ono is the reason that change is audible rather than announced.

The range beyond those is wide. He is Ryuunosuke Akutagawa in Bungo Stray Dogs and its film Dead Apple, Mikaela Hyakuya in Seraph of the End, Yuri Briar in SPY x FAMILY, Phichit Chulanont in Yuri!!! on Ice, Shikadai Nara across Boruto, Alain in Pokemon, Hathaway Noa in the Gundam Hathaway film, Arata Kaizaki in ReLIFE, and Tomohiro Nagatsuka in A Silent Voice.

Western audiences have heard him without knowing it. He is the Japanese dub voice of Harry Potter across the film series and of Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse films, neither of which appears under his name in this catalogue. He sings as well, and plays Muromachi Toji in the Prince of Tennis stage musical, which is the theatre half of the job.

Where to start with Kensho Ono

Kuroko's Basketball is the obvious start and the correct one. It is the role his career is named after, and a full series gives him room to build rather than sketch.

For the harder work, Vinland Saga is where he is best: Canute begins as the least promising character on screen and Ono carries the whole change without a single announced moment. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is the flashier version of the same trick, and Attack on Titan the least sympathetic.

SPY x FAMILY is the comedy showcase and by far the easiest watch here. A Silent Voice: The Movie is the best film on the list and gives him a warm supporting part inside it. Bungo Stray Dogs is for anyone who wants to hear him play cold from the first line onwards.

The roles that made his name

Quiet, watchful protagonists who are underestimated by everyone around them, which is the exact thing his voice does best. Tetsuya Kuroko is a basketball player defined by being easy to overlook, and the casting is close to perfect.

The elegant antagonists

The other half of the range: cold, mannered young men who are entirely certain they are correct. Giorno Giovanna and Ryunosuke Akutagawa are the two most people mean, and Slaine in Aldnoah.Zero is the most tragic of them.

Science fiction and mecha

A run of speculative series where he plays the young man carrying more responsibility than he can hold. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway and Vivy are the two with the largest budgets and the strongest cases for the register.

The romances and school stories

The gentlest corner of his work, where nothing much happens and it takes a whole season to happen. These are the shows to put on when the antagonists have worn you out, and he is completely at ease in all of them.
