Kenneth Tsang
Kenneth Tsang is an actor, born 1934.
Nearly seventy years of work and more than two hundred film roles: what sits in this catalog is a sample, not a career. Tsang was a romantic leading man in Cantonese drama and martial arts pictures through the 1960s and 1970s, a period our records barely touch, since the earliest credit we hold is a policeman in The Secret (1979).
What the catalog does hold is the second act, and it is a great one. John Woo used him repeatedly: Kin in A Better Tomorrow (1986) and its sequel, Sergeant Tsang Yeh in The Killer (1989), and again in Once a Thief (1991). Read the character names across the rest and the casting is obvious. General Moon, The General, Captain Chin, Chief Inspector Lui Ko-Tin, Superintendent Chan, Uncle Seven, Uncle To, Uncle Kin. He played authority, and he played it by lowering the temperature. In a cinema built on operatic gesture he was often the only person on screen who did not need to gesture at all.
Hollywood noticed in the late nineties. The Replacement Killers (1998), Anna and the King (1999), Rush Hour 2 (2001), Die Another Day (2002) and Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) all cast him as the dignified older man in somebody else's action film, a narrow use of him but a steady one. He kept working in Chinese-language cinema throughout, through Overheard 2 and 3, Chasing the Dragon (2017) and Detective Chinatown 2 (2018). His last credits here are from 2022, the year he died.

Where to start with Kenneth Tsang
Start with The Killer. It is one of the great supporting turns in Hong Kong action, holding the film's moral center steady while everyone around him escalates. A Better Tomorrow comes next, for the Woo partnership at its most influential and for Kin, the part he returned to in the sequel. Viewers who met him through the studio pictures should compare Die Another Day and Rush Hour 2, both of which get far more presence out of him than the scripts allot. Peking Opera Blues shows him outside the Woo orbit in a much wilder film. Chasing the Dragon is the best of the late work, where age reads as history rather than frailty, and Police Story 3: Super Cop is the popcorn option.
