Keith Szarabajka

Keith Szarabajka has one of the most recognizable voices in American genre work: a low, sandpapered baritone belonging to a man who sounds like he has been awake for three days and does not intend to explain why. It has kept him in three parallel careers at once, in television, in film, and increasingly in video games.

Television found him first. He played Mickey Kostmayer on The Equalizer in the 1980s, then Daniel Holtz on Angel, which remains his best dramatic work: a man out of another century pursuing a revenge the show refuses to let him enjoy. He is a specialist in a particular kind of implacability, and film has used him in short sharp doses, notably as the detective Gerard Stephens in The Dark Knight and as Adam Engell in Argo.

The voice work is where the volume is. He has been Trigon in Teen Titans and Cikatro Vizago in Star Wars Rebels, and in games Dr. Terrence Kyne in Dead Space, Joshua Graham in Fallout: New Vegas, Harbinger in Mass Effect 2, Detective Herschel Biggs in L.A. Noire and the Didact in Halo 4. That is an unusual concentration of memorable roles for a performer most people cannot name, and Harbinger in particular gave a generation of players a line they can still recite from memory. His earliest film credit here is Missing in 1982, which gives some idea of how long the runway has been.
