Kate Moennig
Kate Moennig is an actor, born 1977.
Shane McCutcheon arrived fully formed and became shorthand almost immediately. Moennig played her across The L Word from 2004 to 2009 and again in Generation Q from 2019, and the reason the part worked is not the haircut everyone copied. It is that she plays Shane with almost no expression and lets the audience do the projecting. Very few actors trust silence that far.
Before that she was Jake Pratt in Young Americans, the WB's short-lived boarding-school series, in a role built on gender ambiguity that a network drama in 2000 had no idea how to handle. She has been drawn to characters who make other people uncomfortable ever since.
Ray Donovan was the useful correction. As Lena, the investigator who does most of the actual work, she spent from 2013 to 2019 underplaying beside actors doing considerably more, and came out looking like the only professional in the room. Her film credits stay small and interesting rather than large: The Shipping News, Art School Confidential, The Lincoln Lawyer, Everybody's Fine. She produces now as well, which suggests a clear-eyed view of how much control an actor otherwise gets.

Where to start with Kate Moennig
There is no way around The L Word and no reason to look for one. Start at the beginning, accept that the first season is a period piece now, and watch what Moennig does with a character the writing keeps trying to explain. The L Word: Generation Q follows it, and Shane older is more interesting than Shane young.
Outside that universe, Ray Donovan is the strongest option. Lena is competent, unimpressed and given nothing showy to do, which is exactly her mode, and Ray Donovan: The Movie finishes the story if you get that far.
The Shipping News and Art School Confidential are the early film credits with real directors attached, and The Lincoln Lawyer is the slick one. Young Americans is a curiosity from 2000 that a surprising number of people quietly remember.
