Kaede Hondo
Kaede Hondo is an actor, born 1996.
Nagoya-born, signed to I'm Enterprise, and busy on a scale that is difficult to convey: close to a hundred credits sit in this catalogue alone, with leading roles scattered through most of them. Hondo belongs to the generation of Japanese voice actresses who came up alongside streaming, when the number of series produced each season went from many to absurd, and she has worked accordingly.
What makes her useful to a casting director is a bright, forward voice that can be aimed in two very different directions. Sakura Minamoto in Zombie Land SAGA is the loud end, a performance that mostly lives at the top of her range and holds together a premise that would collapse if anyone played it calmly. Elaina in Wandering Witch is the other end: cool, unhurried, a narrator's voice more than a heroine's. Maple in BOFURI sits between them, sunny and entirely unbothered while the show does increasingly ridiculous things around her.
The rest is volume, and volume is the job. Hikari Takanashi in Interviews with Monster Girls, Hitomi Mishima in Hinamatsuri, Akira Komi in Komi Can't Communicate, Hakari Hanazono in The 100 Girlfriends, Rin Fujishiro in A Sign of Affection, Eiko Tsukimi in Ya Boy Kongming!, plus small parts inside enormous shows: a Kamado in Demon Slayer, a black cat in BEASTARS. That mix is the whole industry in miniature. On a Tuesday she is carrying a series; on a Wednesday she is a background credit in the biggest anime in the world.

Where to start with Kaede Hondo
Zombie Land SAGA is the entry point and the argument for her at the same time. The show is a comedy about an idol group with a serious staffing problem, and it only works because Hondo is willing to play Sakura at a pitch most actors would be embarrassed by.
Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina is the corrective and the right second watch, since Elaina is all control where Sakura is all noise. The comfort option of the three is BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.. Beyond the leads, A Place Further than the Universe and Hinamatsuri are the two genuinely excellent series she has supporting parts in, and Wonder Egg Priority is by some distance the strangest thing on her list. Komi Can't Communicate and A Sign of Affection round out the gentler register.
The leads
The roles built around her, mostly cheerful girls with something underneath. Sakura in Zombie Land Saga is a comic performance that keeps turning serious, and Bofuri is the purest comedy of the group.
The big franchises
The supporting work in whatever is currently enormous, which is how a modern seiyuu career actually runs. Demon Slayer is the biggest of them and Beastars is the most interesting use of her.
The quieter work
The shows that ask for restraint rather than energy. A Place Further Than the Universe and A Sign of Affection are the warmest, and Wonder Egg Priority is the strangest thing on the list.
