K Callan
K Callan is an actor, born 1942.
The oldest credit on this page is from 1970. The newest is a series airing in 2026. Very few careers stay open that long, and K Callan has spent hers doing the same unshowy job at a consistently high level.
She came up in the character actor lane and stayed in it. The early screen work sits close to New Hollywood: May Lou Curran in Joe in 1970, Mrs Powell in The Onion Field, Lisa Williams in American Gigolo. Television then absorbed the middle of the career a guest part at a time, through One Day at a Time, Police Squad!, Coach and Father Murphy, and delivered the job most people know her for, Martha Kent across Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Martha is the person Clark goes home to, which is a supporting role by design, and Callan made the design invisible.
The late run is the interesting part. Rather than retire into cameos she kept getting cast by people who wanted specifically her: Eleanor McGill in Carnivale, Susan Dayward in Getting On, Greatnana Wanetta in Knives Out, Elizabeth in The Chosen, Ms Engel in Sew Torn, Ruth in Widow's Bay. She is a writer as well as an actress. Whatever she has been doing between jobs for more than fifty years, it has not been waiting for the phone.

Where to start with K Callan
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is the sentimental starting point and a perfectly good one, because Martha Kent is the warmest thing in a show that could easily have been all gloss. If you want the actor rather than the nostalgia, go to Carnivàle, where Eleanor McGill sits in a far stranger register, or to Getting On, a comedy set on a geriatric ward that gives its older performers real material instead of punchlines.
The early work rewards a detour. Joe is the harsh one, American Gigolo the glossy one, and Police Squad! proves she could play it entirely straight while everything around her collapsed. Newest first, Knives Out has her as Greatnana Wanetta, the oldest member of a badly behaved family, and Widow's Bay is the 2026 series still adding to the list.
