Julie Dreyfus
Julie Dreyfus is an actor, born 1966.
Dreyfus is a French actress who became famous in Japan first. In the late 1980s she appeared on NHK's educational channel teaching French, and from there became a familiar television presence, including guest and judging duties on the cooking show English speakers know as Iron Chef. She is fluent in French, English, German and Japanese, and that is not a footnote to her screen career, it is the engine of it.
Quentin Tarantino has cast her twice and both roles are built on language. In Kill Bill she is Sofie Fatale, the lawyer and right hand of a Tokyo crime boss, translating and managing a room she is not supposed to dominate. In Inglourious Basterds she is Francesca Mondino, the French interpreter attached to a Nazi minister, present in scenes where every line is a negotiation about who understands what. Even in Tokyo! she plays an interpreter.
The rest of the filmography is small and international: a Belgian horror film, a European period picture about a Hungarian countess, a bit part in a Japanese underground film in 1995. It is a narrow career and an unusually well defined one, built on a genuinely uncommon skill, which is more than many working actors ever get.

Where to start with Julie Dreyfus
Sofie Fatale in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 is a better part than the screen time suggests: she is the one person in O-Ren's court obliged to manage everybody else, and Dreyfus plays her as competent and quietly appalled. Kill Bill: Vol. 2 gives the character a short, unhappy coda, and Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is the version to seek out if you want both halves as one film.
Inglourious Basterds is the better film and the better use of her. She spends her scenes inside a language game with several people who are lying, and the performance lives in what she chooses not to translate. After that, Tokyo! is a strange and worthwhile oddity, and Vinyan is the darkest thing on the list.
