Joshua Odjick

Joshua Odjick is an actor, born 2001.

One film did most of it. Odjick, who is Algonquin-Anishinaabe and Cree and comes from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community, played Pasmay in the 2021 road movie Wildhood and won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor for it, along with the Vancouver Film Critics Circle prize for a supporting performance in a Canadian film. That is an unusually loud arrival for a first prominent role.

What has followed is a working actor's slate rather than a star's. Little Bird is the most substantial of it: he plays a character credited under two names, Henry and Niizh Little Bird, which tells you most of what the series is about before a frame of it runs. Three Pines put him in a Quebec crime drama, and the ocean-disaster series The Swarm gave him Leon Anawak in a large international production.

The past two years have been genre and scale. He is Collie Parker, walker number 48, in The Long Walk. He is Taniel in IT: Welcome to Derry. Frontier Crucible and the Bon Cop, Bad Cop series are still coming. He is being cast well, in things that will be widely seen, and the honest assessment is that he has not yet had a second part with the weight of the first one.

Where to start with Joshua Odjick

Wildhood is the performance that matters and it is not among the credits listed here, so build around what is. Start with Little Bird, which gives him the most screen time and the hardest material, a family story told across two names and two eras.

Three Pines is the accessible next step, a solid Quebec-set mystery series with an Indigenous thread running under the crime plots, and he is good in the parts of it that count. The Swarm is the big international production, uneven but watchable. Among the newest work, The Long Walk drops him into a large young ensemble where the entire job is reacting, and IT: Welcome to Derry is the horror prequel series. Bon Cop, Bad Cop is the one to watch for next.
