John Michael Higgins

Higgins graduated from Amherst in 1985, sang in an a cappella group called the Zumbyes, and has spent four decades being the funniest person in the third row of somebody else's comedy. His early distinction was mimicry: he played David Letterman in HBO's The Late Shift, which is a tightrope, and Christopher Guest brought him into the mockumentary company on the strength of that kind of control.

What Guest saw is the thing that still defines him. Higgins plays men of enormous, unearned certainty. The dog owner in Best in Show and the folk revival manager in A Mighty Wind are not played as exaggerations; they are played with complete conviction, and the comedy comes from how sincerely he means every word. He never winks. That is the entire technique.

Pitch Perfect turned it into a franchise. John Smith, the a cappella commentator who says something appalling every ninety seconds in a tone of mild professional interest, is a joke built on Higgins' own college history, and it carried three films. Elsewhere he has been the principal, the boss, the lawyer and the neighbour, through Bad Teacher, Yes Man, We Bought a Zoo, Fun with Dick and Jane, Evan Almighty and Licorice Pizza.

He runs a parallel career as a game show host, which suits him exactly. He fronted America Says from 2018 and returned to it in 2026, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2019, and hosted a revival of Split Second in between. Voice work fills the rest, and Varrick in The Legend of Korra is the best of it, a huckster industrialist with far too many ideas and no brake.
