John DeMita

You have heard John DeMita far more often than you have seen him. He is a Yale educated actor who became one of the dependable voices of English language anime dubbing, best recognised for Dosu Kinuta and the Hyuga brothers, Hiashi and Hizashi, in Naruto, which is not among the credits listed here.

Dub acting is a craft with a hard constraint: the performance has to fit a mouth that has already finished moving, in a language it was never animated for. DeMita is good at it because he refuses to let the timing flatten the acting, and the range shows in how unlike each other the assignments are. Alan Elbourne and a priest in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, a teacher in The Animatrix, Glenn Arias in Resident Evil: Vendetta, soldiers and station technicians in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

A second line of work runs through studio animation, the ensemble voices filling out Lilo & Stitch, The Grinch, Migration and Despicable Me 4. A third runs on camera: Colonel Clifford Blakely, a judge on the military drama JAG, plus early credits in Freddy's Nightmares, Spellbinder and Leprechaun 3.
