Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba is an actor, born 1981.
Alba was working steadily as a teenager before anyone knew her name: a kid at a summer camp comedy in 1994, a season of Flipper, an arc on The Secret World of Alex Mack. The job that changed things was Dark Angel, which handed her a genetically engineered fugitive at 19 and, soon after, a Golden Globe nomination. Honey followed in 2003, and for roughly five years she was one of the most photographed actors alive.
What she is actually good at is stillness inside noise. Nancy in Sin City is a role built almost entirely out of other people's attention, and Alba plays it by refusing to perform the desperation the frame keeps asking for. Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four films is the same instinct applied to much worse material: she holds the middle of a scene while everyone around her escalates. The comedies of that stretch, and there were a lot of them, mostly failed to write her a joke worth landing.
The 2010s thinned out. She took the ensemble parts in Little Fockers and Valentine's Day, made four films with Robert Rodriguez, and moved most of her working attention into business. Screen work since has been intermittent and mostly on the action side: a studio action sequel in 2016, two seasons of a police procedural on television, a Netflix revenge picture in 2024. The pattern across all of it is that she is better than the average project she is in, and that the projects with a real director behind them are the ones where you can see it.

Where to start with Jessica Alba
Sin City first. Nancy is the part that proves there is an actor in there: the film is a wall of stylised nastiness and she plays her scenes with a flat, unimpressed calm that gives them a floor. Dark Angel is the other essential, and the reason people cared in the first place, a post-collapse Seattle series carried almost entirely on her physical confidence at 19.
For the studio years, Fantastic Four is the one everybody saw and Into the Blue is the better film to actually sit through, a dumb sunlit dive thriller that knows exactly what it is. Machete is the most fun she has ever looked on screen. Most of the comedies are skippable, and Good Luck Chuck in particular wastes her.
Two outliers reward a look. The Killer Inside Me is a bleak and genuinely difficult film that asks her for something none of the blockbusters did, and Trigger Warning is a lean, joyless 2024 action piece that is at least built around her rather than beside her.
