Jesse Metcalfe

Jesse Metcalfe is an actor, born 1978.

Cast for his face, Metcalfe has spent twenty years working out what to do with the rest. The break was Desperate Housewives, where John Rowland, the teenage gardener sleeping with Gabrielle Solis, was one of the show's opening scandals. Before that he had been Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald on Passions, which is where American soap actors are made.

The film career that followed did not take. John Tucker Must Die handed him the title role in a teen comedy, and then nothing at that budget arrived again. What came instead was the direct-to-video circuit: two Dead Rising films, two Fortress films, Escape Plan 2: Hades, Hard Kill, faith-based drama in God's Not Dead 2. He is a professional about it, and in several of those films he is the only person hitting his marks.

The second act is the interesting one. From 2016 he played Trace Riley in Chesapeake Shores, and the Hallmark ecosystem turned out to fit him exactly: earnest, handsome, unembarrassed by sentiment, equally reliable in a Christmas movie and a Martha's Vineyard mystery. Actors who spend a decade in low-budget action rarely find a stable home afterwards. He did.

Where to start with Jesse Metcalfe

Take John Tucker Must Die first, and take it for what it is: a mid-2000s teen comedy that knows he is the joke and lets him play along. He is genuinely light on his feet in it.

Desperate Housewives is the credit that matters, though his part belongs largely to the early seasons, so treat it as a starting point rather than a commitment. Dallas gave him Christopher Ewing and the closest thing to grown-up dramatic material he has had.

For the current version of him, Chesapeake Shores is where he actually lives: comfortable, well lit, sincere, and much better at that than it is given credit for. Fortress and Hard Kill are the action programmers, fine on a plane and no more. God's Not Dead 2 is for a specific audience and knows it.
