A decade of Shameless is an odd apprenticeship. Jeremy Allen White joined the show in 2011 as Lip Gallagher, the academically gifted one in a family with no use for it, and stayed until 2021, which means he did his growing up on camera inside a series that rarely let anyone catch a break for long.
Then came The Bear, and what he does became legible to everyone. Carmy Berzatto is a man permanently three seconds from a spiral, and White plays him with his shoulders up around his ears and his voice pitched low and fast, a performance built out of restraint that keeps failing. It brought him Emmys and Golden Globes. More usefully, it made him a specific kind of leading man: the wound-tight American who cannot stop working long enough to be helped.
Film has been testing where else that goes. The Iron Claw asked for physical bulk and emotional collapse in the same frame as the wrestler Kerry Von Erich. Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere put him in the hardest job an actor can take, playing a living musician everyone can compare him to. Between the large swings he has taken smaller, stranger work in The Rental, Fingernails and Fremont rather than chasing scale, and 2026 brings a voice part in The Mandalorian and Grogu plus a role in The Social Reckoning. The interesting question is whether he can play anyone relaxed.

Where to start with Jeremy Allen White
Watch The Bear first, obviously, and watch it for the sound as much as the acting. The show is engineered to make you feel his pulse rate, and his performance is the metronome the whole thing runs on.
Then The Iron Claw, which is the argument for him as a film actor. He plays a man whose body is his entire value to his family, and the physical work only impresses because of how sad he lets it be.
After that, go backwards. Shameless runs a decade and you do not need all of it, but the early years are where Lip is most interesting. The Rental and Fingernails are the useful small films, both casting him as a man being reasonable while something goes wrong underneath, and Fremont is the quiet one worth finding. Movie 43 you can skip.
