Jeffrey Donovan
Jeffrey Donovan is an actor, born 1968.
Jeffrey Donovan came up through 1990s ensemble films and short-lived television, Sleepers in 1996, When Trumpets Fade in 1998, the widely disliked Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 in 2000, then Detective David Creegan in Touching Evil. Burn Notice, from 2007, made him a lead. Michael Westen is a burned spy who narrates his own tradecraft to camera, and the show lived or died on whether the audience enjoyed his company for an hour a week. It ran for years.
His best trick is friendly menace. The smile arrives before the threat and does not leave while the threat is being delivered, and it is unnerving in a way that shouting is not. Bill Weboy in Let Him Go is the purest version, a man being hospitable at you. Vance in Hitch is the comic version of the same thing. Steve Forsing in Sicario and its sequel goes the other way, a professional who finds the entire black operation faintly amusing, which tells you more about that world than any exposition does.
He has a strange sideline in the Kennedy brothers, playing Robert in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar and John in Rob Reiner's LBJ, for two directors with very different views of the family. He had a recurring run in the second season of Fargo, and from 2022 to 2023 he was Detective Frank Cosgrove on the revived Law and Order.

Where to start with Jeffrey Donovan
The entry point is Burn Notice, with the caveat that it is a summer network procedural and behaves like one. Watch it for the voiceover, which asks Donovan to explain surveillance and improvised explosives in a bone-dry classroom register while the plot happens around him, and which nobody has done better since.
The film work is where he is more interesting. Let Him Go is the standout: he plays hospitality as a weapon and it is genuinely frightening. Sicario and Sicario: Day of the Soldado show the opposite, a man completely relaxed in a situation nobody should be relaxed in.
J. Edgar is worth it for the oddity of watching him do a Kennedy. Changeling gives him a police captain with no charm at all, and it turns out he is fine without it. Hitch is the light one. Shot Caller is the grim one.
