Jean Yoon is an actor, born 1962.
The role Jean Yoon is known for began on a stage. She originated Umma, the mother of the family, in the 2011 play Kim's Convenience, then carried the part into the CBC television adaptation that began in 2016, winning an ACTRA Award and collecting two Canadian Screen Award nominations along the way. Playing one character in two mediums across more than a decade is rare, and it shows: the television Umma arrives fully formed, with none of the trial and error that usually marks a first season.
Yoon is a writer as well as a performer, born in Illinois and long based in Canada, and the acting career before Kim's Convenience was the standard Toronto working life, a scene or two in whatever production came through town. Those credits contain a distinct pattern. She plays doctors constantly: Dr. Montague in The Time Traveler's Wife, Dr. Sato in The Voyeurs, Dr. Allison Schneider in The Firm, Dr. Madeline Richard in the 2026 film Tuner. Casting directors evidently hear authority in her voice before they hear anything else.
The work since has been steadier and better placed: Mina in Code 8 Part II, Sue Shin in Mistletoe Murders, a judge in Suits LA. She belongs to the category of actor who can carry an entire family history into a scene she has three lines in.

Where to start with Jean Yoon
Kim's Convenience is the answer and there is no serious rival. Umma is the best part she has been given, and the show is built to let her land a joke and a wound in the same line, which is the specific thing Yoon does better than anyone else in the cast.
After that the picks are for the curious. Code 8 Part II gives her the most substantial film role here. The Voyeurs and Rupture are the thrillers, the second much odder than its poster suggests. The Time Traveler's Wife is one of the early minor appearances, useful mainly for seeing how long she worked before the breakthrough. Mistletoe Murders and Suits LA are the current television, and Tuner is next.
