James S. A. Corey is two people: Daniel Abraham, who was already a published fantasy novelist, and Ty Franck, who was George R. R. Martin's assistant and had built the setting as a tabletop game before it was a book. The Expanse ran nine novels and won a Hugo for the series. The pitch is a solar system colonised but not yet interstellar, with the politics of Earth, Mars and the asteroid belt doing most of the work, and the science kept honest enough to matter.

Where to start with James S. A. Corey
Read these in order, which is unusually important here. Leviathan Wakes starts it and pairs a missing-person case with a warship mystery. Caliban's war and Abaddon’s Gate complete the first movement. Nemesis Games is where the series gets much better, splitting the crew apart for a book. Persepolis rising jumps forward thirty years, and Leviathan Falls closes it out.
