James Norton
James Norton is an actor, born 1985.
James Norton was doing two opposite jobs at once through the mid 2010s. From 2014 he was the clergyman detective of Grantchester, about as safe a slot as British Sunday-night television offers. From the same year he was Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley, one of the most frightening men ever written for that same audience, and the performance brought a British Academy Television Award nomination for supporting actor in 2015.
Royce is the reason to pay attention. Norton plays him with almost no threat display at all: soft voice, wounded eyes, a man sincerely convinced he is the injured party in every room he enters, which is far worse than shouting would be. He returned to the character for the later series in 2016 and 2023, and across nine years he never once let it soften into anything an audience could comfortably enjoy.
The rest is a lot of prestige work of variable interest. Andrei Bolkonsky in War and Peace in 2016 and the title role in Mr. Jones in 2019 carry real weight. McMafia in 2018 was constructed as a vehicle for him and never quite took off. Little Women, Rush, Flatliners and Bob Marley: One Love mostly use him as handsome furniture. Recently he has gone historical and large: King Harold Godwinson in King and Conqueror in 2025, Ormund Hightower in the third season of House of the Dragon, and three Beatles films dated 2028.

Where to start with James Norton
Happy Valley, and there is no serious rival for second place. Watch it for the writing first and for Norton second, and notice that his scenes work because he plays a violent man as someone with a grievance rather than a temper. It is the most disturbing thing in a series with a lot of competition.
For the other side of him, Grantchester is the comfortable Sunday version and perfectly good at what it does, and War and Peace is the handsome literary adaptation where he gets to be melancholy in a uniform. Mr. Jones is the serious film, a real journalist in the 1930s Soviet Union, and it is the closest he has come to carrying a picture. Nowhere Special is the quiet one and the best acting he has done outside Happy Valley. McMafia looks superb and never generates a pulse. House of the Dragon is the current large-scale job.
