James Acaster
James Acaster is an actor, born 1985.
James Acaster is a stand-up first and everything else second. The specials Repertoire and Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 hold the actual craft: routines built out of fictional personas, callbacks that pay off half an hour later, and a habit of seizing a trivial observation and refusing to let go of it long past the point of comfort. He has won five Chortle Awards, a Just for Laughs Award, and comedy festival awards in Melbourne and New Zealand.
British television absorbed him the usual way, through panel shows. Mock the Week, Big Fat Quiz, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, The Last Leg and Live at the Apollo all have him. The format does not really suit him, since his comedy needs runway and panel shows sell speed, which is why Taskmaster worked so much better: a task hands him a premise to over-commit to, and over-commitment is his whole engine. Hypothetical, which he fronts, is built along the same lines, and the food podcast Off Menu made him a fixture well beyond comedy audiences.
Acting came later and stays modest. John in Cinderella, Lars in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Felix the Ironmonger in the historical comedy Seize Them!, and a stint as a contestant on The Celebrity Traitors in 2025. He is a good sport on camera and a much better writer than the screen work suggests.

Where to start with James Acaster
Anyone starting from zero should take a series of Taskmaster, because its structure rewards exactly his instinct to build an elaborate private logic and then defend it in total seriousness. Watch one series and the stand-up persona makes immediate sense.
Then Hypothetical, which he fronts, for the same brain in a room he controls. The panel appearances are a lesser use of him, though Never Mind the Buzzcocks and The Last Leg both have good moments, and Live at the Apollo is the short sample of his stand-up.
In film, Seize Them! is the one that actually uses his comic timing, while Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Cinderella give him small colour parts. The Celebrity Traitors is the recent curiosity. His specials remain the real work.
