Jack McMullen

Jack McMullen is an actor, born 1991.

Liverpool gave McMullen the standard route in and he took all of it. Born in the city in 1991, he was on Brookside from 2002 to 2003, Doctors in 2006, Grange Hill from 2004 to 2008 and then Waterloo Road from 2010 to 2012 as Finn Sharkey, which is still the role most British viewers recognise. Very few actors come out of that pipeline with a career on the other side.

He did, by making himself useful to serious drama. The range is narrow and deep: young men from the north of England under some form of institutional pressure, played without any of the sentimentality those parts usually attract. Daniel in the prison drama Time sits exactly at that intersection, and so does Lewis Atterton in the airborne thriller Hijack, where he has to make a small, frightened role register inside a plot moving very fast.

Film has used him more sparingly and more oddly. He is Jack in both parts of The Souvenir, a film-school world away from the soaps, and Charlie Agapiou in Ford v Ferrari, which dropped him into an American studio production about engines.

This City Is Ours in 2025 is the current chapter, a Liverpool crime drama built on the accent and the geography he has had all along. He writes as well, which none of these credits show.

Where to start with Jack McMullen

Time first. It is the best thing on this list and the clearest statement of what he does: a prison drama with no melodrama in it, where Daniel has to register as a person rather than a case study. This City Is Ours is the natural follow-up and the largest part he has had, Liverpool crime with room for him to stretch. Hijack is the popcorn option and he is good in it. For the arthouse side, The Souvenir and The Souvenir: Part II use him sparingly in a very different register. Waterloo Road is the nostalgia pick if you grew up with it, and Ford v Ferrari is the outlier, an American studio film where he turns up in the garage.
