Hugh Quarshie is an actor, born 1954.
Nineteen years on one hospital drama is the headline fact. Hugh Quarshie, born in Accra in 1954 and long resident in Britain, played Ric Griffin on the BBC One series Holby City from 2001 to 2020, which is the kind of run that makes an actor a household face in one country and a recognisable extra in every other.
Look at his casting list and a pattern jumps out immediately. Captain Panaka. Commissioner Cameron Yates. General Harrison. Doctor Harris. Lieutenant Obutu. Detective Joyce. Father Gus. Secretary of institutions, in short: he has spent forty years being cast as the man who holds a rank, and it works because he plays authority as burdened rather than grand. He arrives already tired of the situation, which reads as competence, and directors have been buying that since Highlander in 1986.
The genre history is longer than the Star Wars credit suggests. Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend in 1985, Highlander in 1986, the Italian horror picture The Church in 1989, Nightbreed in 1990, Wing Commander and The Phantom Menace both in 1999. The later work is more prestigious and more scattered: Red Sparrow, The Capture, Absentia, The Railway Children Return, The Son, The Return in 2024. Underneath all of it is the stage career, including his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, which is the part of the resume that never shows up in a streaming search.

Where to start with Hugh Quarshie
For the fun version, Highlander. He plays Sunda Kastagir, and the film has aged into something a good deal better than it was taken for at the time.
Most people arrive from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, where Captain Panaka is one of the few characters behaving like a professional with an actual job. Watch it for that.
The best modern showcase is The Capture, a thriller in which he plays the commissioner and gets to be the smartest person in several rooms. Absentia is the pulpier television version. Nightbreed is for horror people. And Holby City is the nineteen-year commitment nobody outside Britain has attempted, though it is the reason he is famous there.
