Hugh Dillon
Hugh Dillon is an actor, born 1963.
The band came first. Hugh Dillon, born in Kingston, Ontario in 1963, fronted the Headstones and the Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir, and the voice he brought to acting is a singer's voice after two decades of abuse: low, sandpapered, permanently on the edge of an argument. Casting directors worked out very quickly what it was for.
His first great role was almost too on the nose. In Hard Core Logo in 1996 he plays Joe Dick, a punk frontman, in a mockumentary about a reunion tour, and he does the one thing a musician turned actor usually cannot: he plays the neediness under the swagger instead of the swagger itself. Canadian television then kept him steadily employed, as Albert Manning in Degrassi: The Next Generation, Mike Sweeney in Durham County, Ed Lane in Flashpoint, Danny Dexter in ReGenesis, Stan Escher in Continuum and Duncan Sinclair in X Company.
The American work arrived late and suits him. He is Curtis in Wind River, Francis Becker in The Killing and Donnie Haskell in Yellowstone, all men who have run out of options and are still talking. Mayor of Kingstown is the culmination: he plays Ian Ferguson, and he is also a co-creator and executive producer of the series, which is a rare enough position for a working character actor to be worth noting. The trajectory from punk clubs to a producing credit on a prison-town drama is not a common one.

Where to start with Hugh Dillon
Hard Core Logo first. It is a low-budget Canadian mockumentary about a punk band on the road, he plays the singer, and the performance is far rawer and more controlled than the setup has any right to produce.
Once that has calibrated you, Mayor of Kingstown is the current headline: he acts in it and helped build it, and his character carries the show's meanest register. Flashpoint is the mainstream Canadian procedural where a lot of viewers first met him, and Durham County is the darker, better-written version of the same territory. Yellowstone and Wind River are the compact American appearances, both using him as a source of low-level menace. X Company is the wartime outlier and gives him more restraint to play than anything else here.
