Houko Kuwashima
Houko Kuwashima is an actor, born 1975.
Kuwashima, born in Iwate in 1975 and affiliated with Aoni Production, has a range her own industry states flatly: young boys through to adult women, in the same voice. Kenny in Beyblade and Minoru Kokubunji in Chobits are boys. Sango in InuYasha and Clare in Claymore are emphatically not. This catalogue holds 182 of her credits.
The through-line is control rather than sweetness, which is unusual for a voice actress cast this often as women and children. Clare in Claymore is nearly affectless, a half-monster warrior narrating her own damage in a flat, careful register, and Kuwashima makes the flatness itself expressive: everything the character will not say is audible in what she withholds. Soifon in Bleach is clipped and permanently furious. Medusa in Soul Eater is silk laid over a blade. Then she can turn round and play Kie Kamado in Demon Slayer, the mother, in a handful of gentle lines the series returns to whenever it wants to hurt you.
Her first major role was Yurika Misumaru in Martian Successor Nadesico, which this catalogue does not carry. Everything since has been steady and enormous: Sango across the InuYasha films and Yashahime, Tomoyo in Clannad, Kagura in Azumanga Daioh, Delta in Boruto, Peridot in Land of the Lustrous, Satomi Niiyama in Sound! Euphonium and Liz and the Blue Bird, Scarlet in Space Dandy, Rose Thomas in Fullmetal Alchemist.

Where to start with Houko Kuwashima
The one to start on is Claymore. It is a bleak, beautifully designed fantasy series about women bred to hunt monsters, and Clare is the best sustained performance Kuwashima has given, built almost entirely out of restraint.
If you want the popular version, InuYasha gave her Sango for years and is where a whole generation first heard her. Clannad is the softest register she works in and Bleach is the sharpest. Soul Eater lets her be openly wicked, which she rarely gets to be. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba uses her sparingly and devastatingly. For the art-house end of anime, Land of the Lustrous and Sound! Euphonium are the two most interesting productions on her list, and both give her something more delicate to do than a shonen series ever will.
Inuyasha and after
Sango is the signature role, a demon slayer who lost her entire village and carries a weapon made from bone. The four films continue it and Yashahime returns to the character two decades later.
The warriors
Where she is coldest and most controlled. Clare in Claymore is a full series carried almost single-handed, and Shigurui is about as bleak as television animation is willing to get.
The gentle ones
The other register entirely, and the reason the range gets remarked on. Clannad and Sound! Euphonium are slow, quiet shows about ordinary people, and she is completely at home in both.
The strange and the recent
Proof of how long the career has run and how odd it is willing to get. Kaiba and Mononoke are two of the most visually radical series anyone has made, and Demon Slayer is the one everybody has now heard.
