Ginger Gonzaga

Ginger Gonzaga is an actor, born 1983.

Gonzaga arrived through comedy rather than drama school, and her first sustained exposure was as a host: Hulu's daily pop culture show The Morning After, which ran from 2011 to 2012 and required her to be quick, opinionated and likeable on camera five days a week. That is unusually good training for the job she ended up doing.

For a decade after that she was one of American television's most reliably employed supporting players, and the credit list is close to a survey of the era's comedy: Maureen on Anger Management, Peggy on Legit, Maya on Mixology, Christy on Togetherness, Maggie on I'm Dying Up Here, Emma on Wrecked, Audrey on Claws, Vivian on Kidding, Meg on Living with Yourself, Anabela on Space Force. The specific thing she does is play the friend who is funnier than the lead and knows it, delivering plot as gossip so you never notice you are being handed exposition.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law finally made that a front-facing job. As Nikki Ramos she is the audience's way into a show that spends most of its energy being clever, and the warmth is entirely hers rather than the script's. She followed it by taking over Helen Tasker, a role with a very famous prior occupant, as co-lead of the 2023 True Lies series. On film she is Gina in Ted, Jill in Dean and Erica in Punching Henry, all of which are smaller than she is.

Where to start with Ginger Gonzaga

Start at She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. It is the first thing to hand her a full season, and she repays it by being the most human presence in a very knowing show.

Then double back to Kidding, which is her best dramatic work and the strongest evidence that the comic timing is a choice rather than a limit, and to Living with Yourself, where she has to play against a premise that could easily swallow her.

For pure comedy, Wrecked is the daftest and Mixology is the one where the ensemble format suits her. True Lies is the co-lead role, worth seeing for the promotion even though the series around it is broader than she is. Ted and Dean are the film credits, both brief.

She-Hulk and the recent leads

Nikki is the best-written part she has had and she plays the best friend as a person with her own appetites rather than a sounding board. True Lies gave her a co-lead, and Space Force is the ensemble.

The comedies that kept getting cancelled

A decade of main-cast roles in shows that lasted a season or two, which is its own kind of career. Wrecked is the funniest, Mixology is the one that got the most attention, and Legit is the cult pick.

The stranger work

Kidding is the Michel Gondry series with Jim Carrey and the strangest thing on the list by a distance. Claws and I'm Dying Up Here are the other dramas, and the small films are mostly comedians directing themselves.
