Comics first, screens second. Johns made his name at DC rebuilding characters other writers had given up on, most famously Green Lantern, where he took a corner of the universe that had gone stale and expanded its mythology outward into Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night. Aquaman got Throne of Atlantis, Superman got Last Son and Brainiac, and the Flash story Flashpoint became the spine of a company-wide reboot. Doomsday Clock went somewhere DC had left alone for decades.

The credit that says most about him is a smaller one. He co-created Courtney Whitmore, Stargirl, and based her on his sister, who had died. Years later he made DC's Stargirl for television himself, which is a long way to carry a private thing in public, and it shows in the tone of the show.

Television is where he turns up in a filmography rather than a bibliography: creator credits on The Flash, Titans and DC's Stargirl, plus a standing talking-head role in the documentaries DC keeps commissioning about itself, from Secret Origin to Superpowered: The DC Story. The comics runs remain the actual body of work, and the screen shelf is thin next to them.
