Ériq Ebouaney
Ériq Ebouaney is an actor, born 1967.
Acting was the second career. Ebouaney, born in Angers to Cameroonian parents, had no interest in it as a child and expected to go into business; he was working as a sales manager when he joined a theatre company and turned professional. His screen debut came in 1996, in Cedric Klapisch's Chacun cherche son chat.
The role that defines him is missing from the credits below. In Lumumba (2000), shot in Beira in Mozambique, he played Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese prime minister, and everything written about him since measures against it. What the international industry did with that performance is the familiar story for a French African actor with real physical authority: it hired him to stand in expensive rooms and be dangerous. Black Tie in Brian De Palma's Femme Fatale, Ice opposite Jason Statham in Transporter 3, Firuz in Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven, Bwana Ovie in Hitman, Jules in 3 Days to Kill, Baba in Bastille Day.
He is better than that circuit, and the evidence is in the smaller films. Petrus in Disgrace is the most demanding part on this page, a man whose intentions the film never fully spells out, and Ebouaney plays the ambiguity without ever tipping it. Hassan al-Tourabi in Carlos is the same discipline applied to a real political figure.
Recent work has spread out: Fallou Boukar in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Bob Foret in Liaison, and Kabuga in the 2025 Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, which is a genuinely unusual place for a French character actor to end up.

Where to start with Ériq Ebouaney
Nothing else here is as demanding as Disgrace, so make that the first stop. It asks him to hold something back for the length of a feature, and the story turns on how much you are willing to trust his face.
For the star-vehicle version, Femme Fatale is the one worth your time. De Palma builds him a genuinely menacing role in a film that is deliberately silly everywhere else, and he plays it perfectly straight. Transporter 3 is the biggest audience he has had, and the part is exactly what the title implies.
Carlos is the serious historical work, Kingdom of Heaven the prestige credit in a small part, and The Nativity Story a curiosity as one of the three kings.
For the current stuff, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon gives him a proper recurring role in a French-set spin-off, and L2: Empuraan is the Malayalam blockbuster nobody would predict from the rest of this list.
