Eric Nylund has a master's degree in chemical physics and wrote the novel that turned a video game into a fiction franchise. The Fall of Reach was commissioned to fill in what the first Halo game had no room to explain, and it gave the Master Chief a childhood, a training programme and a reason to care about him. Tie-in novels are usually disposable; this one is why the series has a canon at all. He has since written original science fiction and worked inside game studios.

Where to start with Eric S. Nylund
Halo the Fall of Reach (Halo) is the essential one and the book to read before anything else here, since it sets up everything the games assume you already know. First Strike (Halo) follows directly on from it. Ghosts of Onyx (Halo) is the third and the most ambitious of them. Halo, Books 1-3 (The Flood; First Strike; The Fall of Reach) collects the opening run if you would rather have it in one volume.
