Eri Kitamura

Blood+ handed her a lead in 2005, as Saya Otonashi, and Kitamura has barely been off the schedule since. Years with Early Wing were followed by a move to freelance. Music is the other half of the job, and one unusual credit sits beside it: she supplied the voice source for the Vocaloid bank CUL. She also draws manga as an amateur.

The specialism is the girl whose armour is loud. Ami Kawashima in Toradora! is strategically nasty and enjoying it. Saya Takagi in High School of the Dead is the smartest person in a very stupid apocalypse and will say so. Karen Araragi in Monogatari, Izumo Kamiki in Blue Exorcist and Mina Ashido in My Hero Academia all run on the same fuel. Kitamura pitches those characters slightly ahead of the beat, so they sound like they decided what to say before anyone finished asking.

Sayaka Miki in Puella Magi Madoka Magica is where the same instrument turns tragic, and it is the role her reputation rests on: identical brashness, played as something a teenager is using to hold herself together. Mitty in Made in Abyss sits at the far end of the range, in material a good deal harder to sit through.

Everything else is the long tail, and it is enormous. Cana in Fairy Tail, Yui in Angel Beats!, the three Madoka films, Nene Odagiri in Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, the Typhoon Devil in the 2025 Chainsaw Man film. Few voices of her generation are booked this heavily, and the volume has not sanded her down.
